Overview

Continuously examining products, chemicals and materials to better understand their potential harmful effects is central to what we do at UL. This requires that we improve existing testing methods and tools, and sometimes create new ones. For example, we developed a novel analytical technique to identify SVOC (semi-volatile organic compounds) emissions. We have also assembled several databases — cataloguing chemical emissions, toxins and other hazardous materials — one of which contains insights from more than 70,000 product tests. We constantly expand this database, identifying 40-60 new chemicals each month that we’ve never encountered before. Similarly, our Microbial VOC Database is the only one of its kind and empowers a more cost-effective and less destructive approach to identifying molds in building structures as well as their potential sources.

UL has developed more than 1,000 Standards. Thousands of products and their components are tested
to our rigorous requirements every year.
